Competitive League

The competitive league will take place on Friday evenings in 2008 but this year will consist only of singles matches at the Claude Robillard parc, 1000 ave. Émile-Journault.

League format

There will be four teams of six players.

Schedule

Friday, May 23 : Qualifications from 7:00 to 10:00 pm

Friday, May 30 : Regular matches begin for 10 consecutive weeks followed by semi-finals and finals.  (A postponement due to rain will push the schedule back a week.)

First set of matches: 7:00 to 8:30 pm
Second set of matches: 8:30 to 10:00 pm

Teams will be alternated from week to week to eliminate as much as possible any advantage or disadvantage.  This means in most cases if you play from 7:00 to 8:30 pm one week you will play from 8:30 to 10:00 pm the next and vice versa.  In this way you will play five weeks at 7:00 pm and 5 weeks at 8:30 pm.

Match format

All matches will be best two of three sets with no-ad scoring throughout. This means that at deuce, the receiver chooses which side (deuce court or ad court) to receive the serve on the deciding point of the game and no game will ever consist of more than seven points.

If at the end of the 90 minutes allotted, the match is not finished (If the players are in the middle of a point, they must finish that point):

1) For every completed set that you win, you receive 2 points;

2) If the players are in the second or third set the player leading by two games, e. g. 4-2, will obtain another point. If there is only one game difference, say 5-4, then neither of them will have a point for that set;.

3) If, for some reason, the players are still in the first set (!), the player leading by at least two games will receive a point.

PLEASE NOTE:  Warm-ups are limited to TEN minutes.  By using no-ad scoring, most matches should be completed within the allotted time.  New balls will be used for each match.

Team scoring

A victory by a player gives his team a maximum of four points (with many other possibilities that I will illustrate later on).The points for each team accumulate throughout the season and the four teams with the most points go to the semi-final round. If there is a tie, the team with the greater number of match victories will be placed ahead. If there is still a tie, the team with the greater number of sets won will be placed ahead.

Semi-finals and finals

The four teams with the most points will advance to the semi-finals (with the first-place team playing the fourth-place team and the second-place team playing the third-place team).

All matches will begin at 7:00 pm.  Each match will be best two of three sets, regular scoring limited to a maximum of three hours of play.

Cost

$100 for the season, payable by cheque made out to “Yves Trahan”.

Absences and late arrivals

A player who cannot make it to his match must advise his team captain. It is up to the two of them to find a replacement. Failure to find a replacement will result in a forfeit of the match in question.

Please be considerate to your teammates and your opponents and arrive at least ten minutes before the time your match is scheduled. The list of matches and their respective courts will be available on your arrival.

One last thing

Please spread the word about this year’s league. I hope to see you in solid numbers on May 23 for the qualifications.

HAVE A GOOD SUMMER AND GOOD TENNIS TO ALL!
